Scientific impulse in Barcelona at the 'The Future of Personalized Medicine' meeting within the ‘Plan Complementario de Biotecnología en Salud’
Last Friday, the Barcelona Science Park hosted the conference "The future of personalized medicine" within the Complementary Plan for Biotechnology in Health in Catalonia.
With the participation of more than 100 experts in biomedical research, the event facilitated meetings and networking between actors in the translational field of health in Catalonia and other autonomous communities.
Last Friday November 17th, the conference "The future of personalized medicine" was held in the Barcelona Science Park within the framework of the ‘Plan Complementario de Biotecnología en Salud’ in Catalonia. With the participation of more than 100 attendees from the field of biomedical research in Spain, the event had the notable presence of representatives of the Department of Health, Research and Universities of the Generalitat of Catalonia.
This day served as a meeting and networking point to promote collaborations between the various actors in the translational health research ecosystem in Catalonia, as well as with the autonomous communities involved in the Plan, with José María Mato as scientific coordinator of the Plan in the Basque Country and general director of CIC bioGUNE – member of BRTA.
In addition, the scientific coordinators of Catalonia, Galicia, Extremadura, and the Basque Country highlighted the transversal objectives of the ‘Plan Complementario de Biotecnología en Salud’, highlighting the importance of:
- Facilitate the translation between basic and clinical research, promoting a fluid and efficient connection between scientific discoveries and their practical application in the clinical setting.
- Complement and generate technological infrastructures, highlighting the need to develop and strengthen advanced technological resources that support research in biotechnology applied to health.
These objectives expand the vision of the Complementary Plan, focusing on the synergy between research and clinical practice, as well as the promotion of technological infrastructures that enhance innovation in the field of biotechnology.
The projects presented during the day addressed scientific advances in Personalized and precision Medicine, from the implementation of artificial intelligence models to predict risks to innovative methods for drug screening and advanced techniques to improve surgical processes, virtual and augmented reality.
The day also dedicated space to highlighting the technological platforms to support R&D financed by the Complementary Plan in Catalonia, which will be open to the entire Spanish R&D community.
The day concluded with strategic discussions on the future of the Complementary Plan, highlighting its impact on biomedical research, especially in personalized and precision medicine. Several participants praised the Plan's ability to facilitate new collaborations both nationally and internationally, thus fulfilling one of its fundamental objectives.
About CIC bioGUNE
The Centre for Cooperative Research in Biosciences (CIC bioGUNE), member of the Basque Research & Technology Alliance (BRTA), located in the Bizkaia Technology Park, is a biomedical research organisation conducting cutting-edge research at the interface between structural, molecular and cell biology, with a particular focus on generating knowledge on the molecular bases of disease, for use in the development of new diagnostic methods and advanced therapies.
About BRTA
BRTA is an alliance of 4 collaborative research centres (CIC bioGUNE, CIC nanoGUNE, CIC biomaGUNE y CIC energiGUNE) and 12 technology centres (Azterlan, Azti, Ceit, Cidetec, Gaiker, Ideko, Ikerlan, Lortek, Neiker, Tecnalia, Tekniker and Vicomtech) with the main objective of developing advanced technological solutions for the Basque corporate fabric.
With the support of the Basque Government, the SPRI Group and the Provincial Councils of the three territories, the alliance seeks to promote collaboration between the research centres, strengthen the conditions to generate and transfer knowledge to companies, contributing to their competitiveness and outspreading the Basque scientific-technological capacity abroad.
BRTA has a workforce of 3,500 professionals, executes 22% of the Basque Country's R&D investment, registers an annual turnover of more than 300 million euros and generates 100 European and international patents per year.
