Researcher Óscar Millet awarded the Hermanos Elhuyar-Hans Goldschmidt Lectureship 2023
The prestigious Hermanos Elhuyar-Hans Goldschmidt Lectureship 2023 has been handed to Dr. Óscar Millet to recognize his research in the field of chemical biology.
The Royal Spanish Chemical Society (RSEQ) and the German Chemical Society (GDCh) have awarded the Hermanos Elhuyar-Hans Goldschmidt Lectureship to Dr. Óscar Millet, lead researcher from the “Precision Medicine and Metabolism Lab” at CIC bioGUNE, member of the Basque Research & Technology Alliance (BRTA).
Established in 1998, the Hermanos Elhuyar-Hans Goldschmidt Lectureship is named after two chemists who made significant contributions to the field in the 18th and 19th centuries. This prestigious award is presented jointly by the two societies to recognize the achievements of outstanding chemists who have made major contributions to the understanding of the chemical world and its applications.
As part of the award, Dr. Óscar Millet presented three lectures at different German universities: University of Hamburg (May 2nd), University of Göttingen and Max Planck Institute for multidisciplinary natural sciences (May 3rd), University of Mainz (May 4th) and an on-line lecture (May 8th). The German Chemical Society (GDCh) delivered an accrediting certificate during the first conference in Hamburg by Prof. Chris Meier, representative of the GDCh in northern Germany.
Óscar Millet, is CEO of the company Atlas Molecular Pharma, spin-off of CIC bioGUNE, dedicated himself to the search for treatments for rare and ultra-rare metabolic diseases, which has a candidate designated as an orphan drug by the FDA.
The focus of his research is on the use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) for the study of biologically relevant proteins and enzymes, paying particular attention to the delicate balance between protein stability and dynamics. These studies make it possible to develop new compounds with therapeutic activity, particularly in the field of rare diseases.
