San Sebastian hosts the 8th edition of Glycobasque, a leading international meeting in glycoscience

The eighth edition of Glycobasque, the international meeting dedicated to the latest advances in glycoscience, took place on 23rd–24th October at the Gipuzkoa Technology Park (Edificio Central, Paseo Mikeletegi 53). The event brought together top researchers, innovators, and professionals working across the many dimensions of carbohydrate science.

Organized by Niels Reichardt, Elisabete Elósegui, and Jon Imanol Quintana from CIC biomaGUNE (San Sebastian) and Jesús Jiménez-Barbero from CIC bioGUNE (Derio), both centers members of BRTA, Glycobasque 8 once again served as a key meeting point for the international glycoscience community.

Over two intensive days, participants explored the frontiers of research through presentations by distinguished international speakers such as Lars Nitschke (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität), June Ereño-Orbea (CIC bioGUNE), Xuefei Huang (Michigan State University), and Martina Delbianco (Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces).

This year’s edition showcased cutting-edge work spanning cancer glycobiology, glycan synthesis, immunotherapy, glycoconjugate vaccine design, and carbohydrate-protein interaction analysis, among other emerging topics. The diversity of research highlighted the growing impact of glycoscience in areas ranging from biomedical innovation to therapeutic development.

By fostering dialogue between established experts and young researchers, Glycobasque 8 reaffirmed its commitment to driving scientific excellence and collaboration within the Basque Country and beyond.

About CIC bioGUNE

The Centre for Cooperative Research in Biosciences (CIC bioGUNE), member of the Basque Research & Technology Alliance (BRTA), located in the Bizkaia Technology Park, is a biomedical research organisation conducting cutting-edge research at the interface between structural, molecular and cell biology, with a particular focus on generating knowledge on the molecular bases of disease, for use in the development of new diagnostic methods and advanced therapies.

About BRTA

BRTA is an alliance of 4 collaborative research centres (CIC bioGUNE, CIC nanoGUNE, CIC biomaGUNE y CIC energiGUNE) and 13 technology centres (Azterlan, Azti, Ceit, Cidetec, Gaiker, Ideko, Ikerlan, Leartiker, Lortek, Neiker, Tecnalia, Tekniker y Vicomtech) with the main objective of developing advanced technological solutions for the Basque corporate fabric.

With the support of the Basque Government, the SPRI Group and the Provincial Councils of the three territories, the alliance seeks to promote collaboration between the research centres, strengthen the conditions to generate and transfer knowledge to companies, contributing to their competitiveness and outspreading the Basque scientific-technological capacity abroad.

BRTA has a workforce of 3,500 professionals, executes 22% of the Basque Country's R&D investment, registers an annual turnover of more than 300 million euros and generates 100 European and international patents per year.
