CIC bioGUNE participates for the third year in the European Researchers’ Night in Bilbao
On Friday, September 26th, CIC bioGUNE participated for the third consecutive year in the European Researchers’ Night in Bilbao, one of the most important scientific outreach events in Europe, held simultaneously in over 370 cities. This initiative aims to bring science closer to the public, foster scientific vocations, and show how scientific research helps address major societal challenges.
During the event, researchers from CIC bioGUNE brought science “to the streets,” sharing their knowledge in an educational and approachable way with the public. This year, the center presented the workshop “Health, performance, and aging: What biomolecules can tell us”, designed to introduce human metabolism and explain how its study can help understand health and disease.
The workshop allowed attendees to explore CIC bioGUNE’s cutting-edge research projects, focused on metabolomics using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) as a strategic line. Researchers demonstrated how these studies advance understanding of metabolic, rare, and liver diseases, facilitate biomarker identification, and contribute to the development of personalized therapies.
Notable projects presented include:
• AKRIBEA: Early detection of diseases in neonates and adults through molecular profile analysis by NMR. Part of the Basque Country Precision Medicine Initiative and the Complementary Plan for Applied Biotechnology in Health.
• BioSilver: Research on the molecular mechanisms of aging and age-related diseases, promoting healthy aging.
• PreMetaCan: A project funded by the Scientific Foundation of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (FCAECC), studying metabolism in tumor development and treatment resistance to improve the effectiveness of cancer therapies.
• CoDiet: A European initiative analyzing the relationship between diet, microbiota, and metabolic health, developing personalized nutritional strategies to prevent chronic diseases.
The workshop also contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
• SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Promoting biomedical research and healthy habits.
• SDG 4 – Quality Education: Bringing scientific learning to all types of audiences.
• SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure: Highlighting innovation in NMR technologies.
• SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Encouraging collaboration between universities and European projects.
The European Researchers’ Night is funded by the European Commission under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), within the Horizon Europe program, and in the Basque Country it is coordinated by the University of the Basque Country (EHU) through the G9-SCIENCE4ALL project, promoted by the G9 Group of Universities, which seeks solutions to major global challenges through scientific research.
Through its participation in this event, CIC bioGUNE, a member of BRTA, reaffirms its commitment to scientific outreach, demonstrating that research not only explains the world but also provides practical tools to improve health and quality of life.

About CIC bioGUNE
The Centre for Cooperative Research in Biosciences (CIC bioGUNE), member of the Basque Research & Technology Alliance (BRTA), located in the Bizkaia Technology Park, is a biomedical research organisation conducting cutting-edge research at the interface between structural, molecular and cell biology, with a particular focus on generating knowledge on the molecular bases of disease, for use in the development of new diagnostic methods and advanced therapies.
About BRTA
BRTA is an alliance of 4 collaborative research centres (CIC bioGUNE, CIC nanoGUNE, CIC biomaGUNE y CIC energiGUNE) and 13 technology centres (Azterlan, Azti, Ceit, Cidetec, Gaiker, Ideko, Ikerlan, Leartiker, Lortek, Neiker, Tecnalia, Tekniker y Vicomtech) with the main objective of developing advanced technological solutions for the Basque corporate fabric.
With the support of the Basque Government, the SPRI Group and the Provincial Councils of the three territories, the alliance seeks to promote collaboration between the research centres, strengthen the conditions to generate and transfer knowledge to companies, contributing to their competitiveness and outspreading the Basque scientific-technological capacity abroad.
BRTA has a workforce of 3,500 professionals, executes 22% of the Basque Country's R&D investment, registers an annual turnover of more than 300 million euros and generates 100 European and international patents per year.
