CIC bioGUNE celebrates the recognition of its young talent at the 2025 SEBBM–BBVA Foundation Awards

The Spanish Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM) and the BBVA Foundation have recognized, in the third edition of their Awards for the Best Communication by Young Researchers, the excellence and emerging talent in biochemistry and molecular biology, highlighting three young scientists from CIC bioGUNE for their innovative scientific contributions.

The Spanish Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM) and the BBVA Foundation have presented the third edition of the Awards for the Best Communication by Young Researchers, a distinction that acknowledges the excellence and scientific communication skills of emerging talent in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology.

This year’s edition, held within the framework of the 47th SEBBM Congress at the San Francisco Complex in Cáceres, received 298 communications, of which 16 were selected for their quality, originality, and scientific relevance.

Among the awardees, three young researchers from CIC bioGUNE were recognized for their outstanding contributions to cutting-edge areas of molecular biology:

  • Martín Trujillo Pérez, from the Synthetic Biology Laboratory, for his work “Expanding Base Editing through Ancestral Sequence Resurrection: A step toward broader and safer Genome Editing.”
  • Claudia M. Rejano Gordillo, from the Liver Diseases Laboratory, for her study “TIGAR SUMOylation-Driven Metabolic Rewiring via Warburg Effect and Pentose Phosphate Pathway in Liver Cancer.”
  • Mónica Pozo Rodríguez, from the Ubiquitin-like Proteins and Development Laboratory, for her research “Development of BioDUB, a biotin-based approach to identify specific targets of deubiquitinases.”

At CIC bioGUNE, a member of BRTA, we extend our congratulations to Martín, Claudia, and Mónica, as well as to all the awardees, for their dedication, commitment, and contribution to advancing scientific knowledge.

This recognition highlights the value of young talent in biomedical research and the essential role of collaborative science in addressing global challenges in health and sustainability. At CIC bioGUNE, we foster an inclusive, innovative, and excellence-driven research environment that promotes the training and development of new generations of scientists.

The SEBBM–BBVA Foundation Awards reaffirm the importance of supporting scientific communication and showcasing the work of young researchers, whose contributions are crucial to societal progress through science.

About CIC bioGUNE

The Centre for Cooperative Research in Biosciences (CIC bioGUNE), member of the Basque Research & Technology Alliance (BRTA), located in the Bizkaia Technology Park, is a biomedical research organisation conducting cutting-edge research at the interface between structural, molecular and cell biology, with a particular focus on generating knowledge on the molecular bases of disease, for use in the development of new diagnostic methods and advanced therapies.

About BRTA

BRTA is an alliance of 4 collaborative research centres (CIC bioGUNE, CIC nanoGUNE, CIC biomaGUNE y CIC energiGUNE) and 13 technology centres (Azterlan, Azti, Ceit, Cidetec, Gaiker, Ideko, Ikerlan, Leartiker, Lortek, Neiker, Tecnalia, Tekniker y Vicomtech) with the main objective of developing advanced technological solutions for the Basque corporate fabric.

With the support of the Basque Government, the SPRI Group and the Provincial Councils of the three territories, the alliance seeks to promote collaboration between the research centres, strengthen the conditions to generate and transfer knowledge to companies, contributing to their competitiveness and outspreading the Basque scientific-technological capacity abroad.

BRTA has a workforce of 3,500 professionals, executes 22% of the Basque Country's R&D investment, registers an annual turnover of more than 300 million euros and generates 100 European and international patents per year.
