The ancient DNA revolution: a new tool to unravel the human evolutionary history

Over the past decade, the application of NGS techniques to the recovery of ancient human genomes has revolutionized the study of our past. To date, more than 5,000 ancient human genomes have been sequenced, allowing us to study human population and evolutionary history with unprecedented resolution. During the early years of use of this new technology, research focused on understanding past population movements and admixture events as well as natural selection. In recent years, ancient DNA data are increasingly being used to study the impact of ancient pathogens and to reveal social organization in past societies. During the talk, we will review the most relevant applications of ancient DNA data and their impact in our knowledge of the human past.
