The Center for Cooperative Research in Biosciences, CIC bioGUNE, hosts from 12 to 14 September an international workshop on metabolomics, under the title Technology and Applications, featuring leading researchers in this field of science.

- Leading researchers, including President of the Metabolomics Society, Dr. Robert Hall, will be present at the meeting.

- Metabolomics is the latest addition to the "-omics" sciences, which include genomics and proteomics.

Metabolomics is one of the latest additions to the -omics sciences, a group that includes genomics and proteomics. It has been defined as the quantitative and qualitative analysis of metabolites in a certain fluid, tissue or organism. The research result of this science is the construction of a metabolome or "metabolic footprint". Given the direct link between the set of metabolites and the state of a cell, tissue or organism, the metabolic footprint is perfect to determine the typical biomarkers of certain pathologies and to identify the key cell pathways involved in the development of diseases.

The workshop, organised by Dr. Juan Manuel Falcón Pérez, Ikerbasque researcher in charge of the Metabolomics Unit at CIC bioGUNE, will cover the main advances of this novel technology and its applications in the research of certain diseases and biological processes.

The workshop has been partially funded by the Basque Government and is also participated by two of the sectors leading companies: Waters and the Brucker Corporation. This professional meeting will bring together renowned researchers such as Dr. Clary B. Clish, from the Broad Institute of Massachusetts, (USA); Professor Elaine Holmes, from the Imperial College, London; and Dr. Robert Hall, from the Centre for Biosystems Genomics, in Waningen, The Netherlands, who also chairs the Metabolomics Society.

"This meeting will bring together some of the most relevant researchers in this field. It is also a fantastic opportunity to interact and share the latest scientific breakthroughs that have been achieved through metabolomics", said Falcón.
