Edurne Berra, from CIC bioGUNE, is awarded the Íñigo Álvarez de Toledo Prize for Basic Research

Edurne Berra Ramírez (Donostia, 1967), a researcher at CIC bioGUNE, has been awarded the 19th Íñigo Álvarez de Toledo Basic Research Prize for her paper "The signalling cascade activated by hypoxia and the HIF (hypoxia inducible factor)", for which she was funded by the Bizkaia:xede Grant Programme 2006. Edurne Berra was presented with her prize - regarded as Spain's most prestigious award for kidney research - at an awards ceremony held at La Zarzuela Palace and presided over by Queen Sofía.

After graduating in Pharmaceutics from the University of Navarra, Edurne Berra obtained the special degree of Brussels Free University and went on to gain her doctorate in Sciences at Madrid Autonomous University. Between 1999 and 2006 she worked at the Niza branch of the French National Scientific Research Centre, subsequently joining CIC bioGUNE's Cellular Biology and Stem Cells Unit.
