Peter Bowler opens the cycle of talks entitled 'Darwin and Wallace. 150 years of discovering evolution'
On 26 February, Peter Bowler, Professor in the History of Science at Queen's University Belfast and former Chairman of the British History of Science Society, officially opened in Bilbao the cycle of talks entitled 'Darwin and Wallace. 150 years of discovering evolution' organised by CIC bioGUNE in collaboration with the British Council and the BBVA Foundation.
Under the title: 'Wallace and Darwin; the same but different?', Bowler talked about how Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace 'discovered' evolution practically at the same time, although completely independently of one another. Thus, the British historian explained how the works of Darwin and Wallace, which were presented simultaneously at the Linnean Society in London, on 1 July 1858, had many similarities, but also many substantial differences.
Over the coming weeks, up until 29 April, another five highly-respected experts will offer different takes on the legacy of the discoverers of evolution in modern science, and the impact of the resurgence of creationist theories over recent years.
