International experts are to study the latest breakthroughs in genetic research into cancer in Bilbao

The 11th European Workshop on Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics of Solid Tumours, organized by Dr. Luis Antonio Parada, Group Head of the Cellular Biology and Stem Cells Unit of the Co-operative Bioscience Research Centre, CIC bioGUNE, will be held between 6 and 9 September in Bilbao and will feature a good number of internationally renowned scientists.

These researchers will give talks and exchange the results of the latest breakthroughs in the cancer research being carried out in their respective laboratories.

This seminar's scientific committee comprises Charles Buys -Professor of Medical Genetics at the University of Groningen (Holland)-, Juan Cigudosa -Lead Researcher of the Molecular Cytogenetics Group of the National Oncological Research Centre in Madrid, Paul Edwards -Professor of Cellular Molecular Pathology at Cambridge University (United Kingdom), Lidia Larizza -Professor of Medical Genetics at the University of Milan (Italy), Felix Mitelman -Professor of Clinical Genetics at Lund University (Sweden)-, Rosa Miró -Professor of Genetics at the University of Barcelona- and Manfred Schwab -Professor of Genetics at Heidelberg Cancer Research Centre (Germany)-.

The scientific programme for the event offers plenary lectures by researchers of international standing, some of the best known being Ronald DePhino - Harvard University (U.S.A.), Carlo M Croce - Ohio University (U.S.A.), Richard Houlston - Cancer Research Institute (United Kingdom) and Tobias Sjöblom - Uppsala University (Sweden)-. In addition, presentations will be given on the contributions made by over 100 researchers.

The 11th European Workshop on Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics of Solid Tumours will take place between 6 and 9 September at Bilbao School of Engineering. During the 22 years that have gone by since this biennial working meeting was first launched, it has become a key European discussion forum on cancer genetics. Cities where this scientific seminar has been held previously include Barcelona (Spain), Louvain (Belgium), Vienna (Austria), Montpellier (France) and Brno (Czech Republic).
