Immunological adjuvants may help to stimulate the immune response to the co-administered antigens

Immunological adjuvants may help to stimulate the immune response to the co-administered antigens. Therefore, they have become increasingly important for developing prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines. In this context, using a multidisciplinary approach combining synthetic chemistry, bioactivity assays and computational methods, a team of scientists from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the University of La Rioja, CIB-CSIC, and CIC bioGUNE have investigated the role of different variants of the saponin natural product QS-21, which exhibit striking differences in their in vivo adjuvant activities. The results have permitted to correlate the biological activity correlate with specific conformational preferences.
