Ana Talamillo and Jonatan Sánchez from the group of Rosa Barrio were awarded the 3rd prize for the poster entitled "Sumoylation is necessary for the metamorphosis of Drosophila melanogaster" during the 49th Annual Drosophila Research Conference held in San Diego CA, USA, in April 2008

Talamillo and co-workers showed that lack of sumoylation arrests larval development, probably due to the impairment of lipid droplets entrance into the gland responsible for steroid hormones synthesis from cholesterol. Based on the conservation of the steroid hormones mechanism throughout evolution, these experiments could provide insights into the physiological regulation by steroid hormones in higher organisms and associated pathologies. There results were recently published in the journal Development.
