Taking Stress out of Melanoma (the long arm of BRAF)

Dr. Juan Ángel Recio

Taking Stress out of Melanoma (the long arm of BRAF) We described an intriguing link between BRAF and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), the key sensor of metabolic stress in eukaryotic cells. This study may explain how oncogenic BRAF (V600EBRAF) overcomes the metabolic stress signals that normally inhibit cell growth. The data suggest that V600EBRAF regulates metabolic signaling directly, describing a V600EBRAF-AMPK ’axis’ that allows proliferation and resistance to energy stress conditions. Importantly, these results point to strategies that may provide therapeutic benefit by combining drugs that target growth and metabolic signaling pathways.
