HIV pathogenesis and the prospect for an HIV-vaccine
Prof. Françoise Barré-Sinoussi
In 2008, Prof. Francoise Barré-Sinoussi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with Prof. Luc Montagnier, for their discovery of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in 1983. She performed some of the fundamental work in the HIV as the cause of AIDS. Prof. Barré-Sinoussi´s unit in Virology Department, Institut Pasteur, works on understanding of the precise mechanism underlying HIV/SIV pathogenesis and its control, specifically on cellular restriction mechanisms that may limit viral replication and on regulation by immune system, including critical components of the innate immunity.
