Biostatistical and computational modeling of immune-mediated diseases: a translational journey Mayte Suarez-Farinas is currently a Professor at the Center for Biostatistics and The Department of Genetics and Genomics Science of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York. She received a master´s degree in mathematics from the University of Havana, Cuba, and in 2003, a Ph.D. degree in data science from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Prior to joining Mount Sinai, she was co-director of Biostatistics at the Center for Clinical and Translational Science at the Rockefeller University, where she developed methodologies for data integration across omic studies to dissect inflammatory pathways in immune-mediated skin diseases. Dr. Suarez-Farinas framework to evaluate drug response at the molecular level in studies of new targeted drugs contributed to identified therapeutic mechanisms of new biologics in psoriasis and eczema and lead to remarkable translational successes. Since joining Mount Sinai, her research has expanded to other immune conditions including Inflammatory bowel syndrome and food allergies, as well as viral infections. Combining robust statistical techniques, computational approaches to mine and integrate complex high-throughput data, and machine learning, Dr Suarez-Farinas´s work has led to advances in biomarker discovery, patient stratification, and new frameworks for the classification of complex immune mediated diseases based on molecular features.
